Evaluation 7 Looking Back At Your Preliminary Task. What Do You Feel You Have Learnt In The Progression From It To The Full Production?

When looking back at the preliminary task that the editing has proved a lot. We improved a lot on the match of action and eye line match it looks more realistic now, when we filmed our preliminary task we wasn't sure how we had to have each shot and the perfect angle. We were taught the 180 degree rule but we didn't do it as well as we did in our media product the audience would have no confusion but in our preliminary the shots didn't match, which caused enigma.
The preliminary task didn't look realistic. The shots were not levelled and didn't match we also messed up in editing because when i opened the door and walked in it didn't match as much as it should. The continuity editing was all wrong when we gave the skittles it was timed as well and thank you was repeated twice but we cut the sound.

Evaluation 6 What Have You Learnt About Technologies From The Process Of Constructing This Product?

Blogger is one of the technologies that i learnt about through this process, this is where i put all my work and also checked up to see what the upcoming tasks are and when the work has to be completed. Blogger is also where i put up my final draft of our opening sequence.

Youtube was another technology that i used through this process.
Youtube was used for uploading my videos that i could post on my blog. I learnt how to add a video on youtube and how to transfer it on to my blog.Youtube also helped me view other supernatural horror clips.

PD 170 Camera is what we used to capture our footage for our opening sequence and our preliminary task.
The reason we used this camera is because we wanted to use the mini screen to see if we had the footage and if we had the right shot and angle. Another good feature about this camera is that it has a speaker which cleared out the voices which actually helped us.

The Mac Pro is what we used to edit our opening sequence and preliminary tasks. I also learnt how to use the applications on this computer because they are different to other computers i have used. The Mac Pro was also used to burn our opening sequence and put it on a DVD.

Rough Cut Of Our Opening Sequence.

This is a rough cut of our opening sequence this has just been edited in some parts.

Evaluation 5 How Did You Attract/Address Your Audience?

The Abandoned was based in a creepy burnt down house, this was the main feature that we used to attract our audience the house wasn't something that you would normally see and it was also in an open field with nothing around which also makes the audience think whats going to happen next as there is no one around to help her.

We also wanted to address the audience by using a teenage girl, this is the perfect way to attract your audience because we started the age group from age 15 on wards and having someone that they can relate to and this would keep them interested. We started our production off with an establishing shot which shows her whats behind her and what she's holding in her hand to represent a school girl.

We used reporters to make it seem as a real story and that it was actually based on true events to make it more effective we used more than one reporter this just helps build tension within the audience. Using the reporters made it seem as the film is about an investigation and past events.

One main attraction we used was showing a bible in the house,we did this because many supernatural horror contain religion and the bible is a massive attraction, its shown in most possessed films that they use the bible to help cure the person. So by showing the bible its attracts the audience because it gets them thinking if she did get help or not.

Evaluation 4 Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product?

We are aiming our target audience to be between the age of 15-24 years old. The reason we aimed it from 15+ is because we used a young girl in her school uniform who is walking home from school. Also we are doing a supernatural horror we decide that aged 15 is the youngest we will go this because the location we used was a creepy house that has been burnt down and in the middle of no where and it would frighten the younger audience to show a possessed girl.

Our media product wasn't aimed at a certain gender we used a female actress but the overall production was to male and females because the story was about a young teenage who gets possessed in a burnt down abandoned house it would effect both. The reason we aimed it at both genders is because this type of thing can happen to anyone we just used a girl.

Before we recored our media product we asked our target audiences what types of films they prefer horror or thriller and and what the films were called ,this helped us get ideas on how we should record our film and what we should feature to keep the audience interested. Our audience research showed that the main film that was mentioned was paranormal activity which is a supernatural horror. The film gave us a few ideas on how we should produce our opening sequence and how to direct it to our target audience.

Paranormal activity is a supernatural horror which has things getting moved around without anyone touching them also doors that shut on there on. The social group we were aiming at was the type that like going cinema. We were aiming at ABC1s and C2DEs,because these both groups could enjoy thriller and horror films and they can also relate to it.

Evaluation 3 What Kind Of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product And Why?

If i had a bigger budget to distribute my film the types of media distributers that i would invest money in are..

Ghost house pictures. The reason i think this distributer would be good for 'The Abandoned' is because ghost house pictures was part of the making of The messengers,Drag Me To Hell and The Grudge.

IMDb is another company i would invest in.IMDb is the online database of information related to movies. And it is also a distributor.

One very successful distributor is Paramount pictures this is a internationally established distribution company. This distribution company has worked with different types of film but it has great success with horror films. Amityville Horror,Friday The 13th,The Omen are films that paramount distributed and the films were very successful in cinemas. I would like to invest money into a big american company because the gross revenue is always higher than the budget. 'The Abandoned' should be distributed by Paramount pictures because it has a typical horror convention storyline and would be very successful.

Evaluation 2 How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups.

Our media product "The Abandoned" is about a young girl who enters a burnt down house which is later shown that the house is possessed. We used a school girl because it relates to our target audience. The costume we used was a school uniform the girl was wearing a short navy blue skirt with a white shirt and a blazer this gave it a full effect that we were protraying a 15 year old school girl. we made our character where a full uniform because we wanted to show she was young and many horrors we had seen had the similar uniforms. We compared our costumes to the beginning of the ring where the girl is killed in her uniform. the makeup we used was a girly type makeup which most teenager would wear this is also common in many films. we wanted to have a normal teenage girl but we made her more of an outcast to fit our story line.

We didn't make our media production a typical horror we used a quiet girl that doesn't really get in trouble to make it less stereotypical this also gives our film a twist. Thats why the social group she represents is an outcast this isn't really common in films but we used this because we wanted a quiet young girl that hasn't got many friends so when she walks in the house alone its normal because she's use to being by herself.

The picture shown above shows two school girls from the film the ring but the way there are dressed shows that they social groups is popular and have loads of friends compare to our character we had Aime in her school uniform but she wears glasses and her skirt isn't as short as theres but we did let Aime wear makeup but it shows her as an outcast. There body language is a lot different to Aime's as there are shown to be the type of girls who are around boys and more out there as aime is all alone and her uniform is neat she's also more of a jumpy character.

Evaluation 1 In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use,Develop And Challenge Forms And Conventions Of Real Media Products?

The Abandoned

The Blair Witch Project

The shots above are showing two creepy houses one is from The Blair Witch Project and the other one is from our opening sequence The Abandoned. Both of them were filmed in a creepy house this gives our film an extra effect because the house is the main feature and contains the films story line. The houses in both film are haunted which causes whoever enters it to become possessed.

We used props in our opening sequence and the props that we used was a bible and cross the reason we used this is because in many typical conventional horrors religion is used for help. The shot of the cross is from the film Amityville horror which is also about a house that gets a man possessed.

Aime is dressed in a school uniform this is to establish that she is a young girl and she attends school so this makes her seem very vulnerable. I compared her uniform to a horror Halloween H2o This is also another typical convention.

We didn't use much lighting we left it dark to make her stand out. This to scare the audience because it looks like she's walking into a pitch black room which causes an enigma. It doesn't show whats exactly happing in the room. The camera is on a shallow focus.

This is a list of screen shots from our opening sequence that helped me with my evaluation.

Update March 14

March 14 our group was in the middle of editing and we started to film extra footage that we might need to add. We also updated our blogs to make sure we have completed all our work and have added enough detail as we could. As a group we all have helped with the editing E.G making sure the right footage is added and put together properly.

Props

for our opening sequence we used many props to help create our paranormal horror. The props that we used were..

A Bible And A Cross

The reason we used this is because we wanted to make our opening sequence look effective and also we filmed it in a burnt down house and the bible and cross are in perfect condition showing that it was not in the house at first.

The other props we used was a School Uniform,Glasses,Bag and a Doll. The props helped make it more effective and create a lot of tension.

Risk Assesment

We decided to do film our opening sequence in a burnt down house to make it look real and give a supernatural horror effect but before we could start our filming we had to check the whole house out to see whether or not it was safe to film there and what hazards could of effected us during our film production. There were many hazards that were there but the hazards the were there could be avoided e.g. there was a lot of burnt wood on the floor it was a lot of mess but we still decided to film there because it helped bring out the supernatural horror effect. But before we actually started filming we checked to see if the house was still stable and that there was no chances of it dropping on us. We also filmed our horror clip really quick just to be safe and we wanted to be near a busy environment just incase anything did happen we could get help.

Location Recce

For our location research we decided that we wanted to film our opening sequence in a house. The reason we chose a house is because we wanted our clip to look like a real paranormal horror. In order to make it look effective and realistic we wanted an abounded house because that would help the effect of a possessed house that we were aiming for.We went around many different areas to find a perfect place to do our opening sequence. We wanted it be like a haunted house, this would also make the audience think why the house is haunted and what exactly had happened there.

Perliminary Task

Audience Research

As a group we decided to film our audience research. We went around and asked a number of people aged 16-24,what genre they preferred horror or thriller. We also asked if they knew what a paranormal horror is and what they would like to see in one. The audience research helped give us ideas on what we should feature in our opening sequence and how we should make it suitable for the age group we were targeting.

Update 14/02/2012

Today as a group we went out and filmed our opening sequence we also had two other people to help us with it. We filmed it in Romford in a old burnt down house we used many crops to make it a supernatural horror. We managed to do most of our sequence and we added many different effects and made it seem really paranormal. We only have a little bit more to film.

Treatment

Our film is based on supernatural horror we chose this genre because as a group we found it interesting and also we really wanted to film something like this after watching Paranormal Activity it gave us many ideas that we can use for our opening sequence. Our opening sequence is about a young girl called Amie and she believes she is being haunted after walking past an abandoned house. After hearing a scream she discovered many weird things started happening to her. The story line is about how she gets possessed and wants to take other peoples life so she can replace her own. The beginning starts of with the scream and continues on showing us an old women in the window. The twist in the film is that once she entered the house her soul got trapped and the scream she heard was herself. we chose this idea because we had a perfect vision on how we want to film it and how we are going to get it done and follow the script and get a perfect supernatural horror sequence.

Update 12\02/12

As a group we all decided to start our filming,we decided to do it during half term to make it easier for us to edit our work. we also planned to film most of our work in a house because many supernatural horrors are based in a house. This also helps making the opening sequence seem more real because there is many props we can use. We plan to follow the script step by step.

Research Story Idea

As a group we decided to do our film on paranormal horror,to do this we researched films that have paranormal horror so we looked up Paranormal Activity and An American Haunting. Both films contain things getting thrown around the room without anyone touching them. People getting picked up and slapped but no one is there.

Paranormal Activity stars a man and women named Micah and Katie a young couple moved into a new house together but something starts happening at night in there new house. The film has many scenes that were filmed at night while they were both asleep and the spirit started terrorising ten by throwing things pulling covers off and banging doors. One scene a light turns on and off in the opposite room and the're bedroom door slam shut, loud banging is heard and apparently something is trying to get in. Also to spook out the audience the glass over there picture gets smashed and Micah's image gets scratched. This show us that the spirit that is haunting Katie has an obsession with Katie. Later on in the filmed we find out that the spirit has been with her since a vey young age.
This film gave us a lot if ideas so we decided to use a couple of things to keep our audience wanting more.

The other film we researched was an American haunting, this film also gave us a lot if ideas the difference with both of the films, is one is modern and the other one is based in the 19th century. An American Haunting is about an family but the young girl is getting haunted by herself at a younger age. This film starts off with a witch cursing Betsy father. There is many paranormal scenes that occur in this film one main part is when the family sees Betsy suspended above the floor with unseen hands and they watch what seems to be hands slapping her across the face.

The two films are paranormal horror but are two different story lines, the common thing that we noticed is that the paranormal behaviour begins at night first while everyone is sleeping and eventually it starts happening during the day. This gave us ideas on how we should film our opening sequence and what time would be best for us to do our filming and how we can target our audience. We also decided to throw props around without anyone actually touching them so it looks like a spirit.

Update1 01/02/2012

Today the group got together and we planned our story idea.We decided to do a horror/mystery film so we researched Paranormal activity and An american haunting.the two films showed us how we can have a perfect mystery horror and shows us what genre it is.After seeing the two films we decided to do our film about a young girl getting haunted by a child.

Conduct Research Into Codes And Conventions

The typical story line for horror is that there is always a murderer normally with a past or a bad childhood e.g. got bullied. The story line always builds up with new people enter a town and they don’t know what happened and once they do find out its too late. There is always one person that survives in typical horror film.

Most horror films the characters are teens or a family one or the other. Using teenagers helps younger audience to watch the film and engage with it. The lead character is the one that has to come face to face with the killer and has to defeat them and try to kill them. The killer/monster has a trademark they have a certain pattern of killing and a weapon they use.
Most horror films are set in a small town/city there normally isolated and urban environment. The setting is usually a large space environment which helps the killer/monster ran around in big space and also the characters can try to escape. If it is set in a house it is normally dark like shadowy light.

When it comes to horror most of the films have the same type of iconography like the lighting that is used most of the time its a dark light normally used to show shadows. The lights are normally dark or red this is used in a horror film to represent evil. The lights are non naturalistic it just causes an enigma.
The props used in a typical horror film is a chainsaw, mask, knife ect this helps the audience to identify that it is a horror film. The props used in a horror film helps create a tension and helps the audience engage with what is going on.The reason all these props are used is to make the audience panic and fear what is going to happen.

The cinematography that is used is Establishing shot this shows the location and how isolated it is.Another shot that is used is an extreme closeup which emphasis the subject.A long shot to show what danger the character is in.Tracking is used when the killer is running after the characters.A dolly shot makes out that the characters are getting watched.A point of view shot is also used to show what the characters are seeing.

Normally the start of a horror film has eerie music this plays when the titles are shown this just gives you an edgy feeling. The music tends to be orchestral which creates an haunting effect. Also the sound that is used is a theme for the film and it is also non diagetic,it is only used to emphasis what is happening. Most horror films also have a very high pitch when the killer is approaching  this just creates an edgy feeling.

Analyse A Film Opening Sequence

The film that I am analysing is 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' the film was directed and produced by Tobe Hooper. The opening sequence allows the audience to establish the genre of the film which is horror. I know this because the opening sequence of the film shows a very dark background slowly fades in showing a picture of a baby. The baby doesn’t seem to have a normal face which helps the audience to adapt the film’s storyline. The open sequence the light flashes to cause the audiences to become enigma it also shows a shadow of a man this tells us that he is looking at the pictures. The camera then quickly pans across and shows a police document with the name “Thomas Hewitt”. This starts to gives us a brief idea on what is going on. The lights start to brighten and it shows a man wrapping another man’s face with bandage this starts to introduce the characters and shows us that the man who is getting wrapped is Johnny. This also tells the audience that the film genre is a horror.
The narrative is established straight away when the police document are shown telling the audience something had happened in the past. It also shows little clips like the man with the dirty hand burning the picture of the baby. The editing also helps establish what is going on especially by the montage. There are many scenes put together that show us the whole town and it c
The sound that is used is non diegetic sound which helps adapt the scene. The music is spooky and violins are played. Diegetic sound is also used when the man says “Don’t worry about it Johnny” .this introduces Johnny as the man that is getting the bandage wrapped round his face. The Texas chainsaw massacre open sequence doesn’t have many characters. It just shows us a brief introduction to the story.
ross cut showing us what is happening as well.
The opening sequence builds a tension which makes the audience feel uneasy because they don’t know what is going to happen it makes them feel uncomfortable.
